A turnbuckle is a mechanical device used to adjust the tension or length of ropes, cables, tie rods, and other tension systems.
It can consist of two threaded eye bolts, one screwed into each end of a small metal frame. The frame, also known as the body or barrel, is usually made of steel or aluminium and has opposite threads on each end. By rotating the body of the turnbuckles, the eye bolts are either drawn together or pushed apart, increasing or decreasing the tension in the attached lines.
Turnbuckles are commonly used in various applications:
- construction - for tensioning gguy wires and bracing structural elements
- marine - for rigging on sailboats and other vessels
- theatrical rigging - to adjust the height and tension of stage curtains and scenery
- sports - in wrestling rings to secure the ropes
- utilities - for tensioning cables in utility poles and transmission towers
